 My Practicum Journey

1. Purposes of Practicum

The main purpose of my practicum was to use English for communication more frequently. This goal was fully met during my time in Manila, where I was able to speak English almost all the time with everyone, whether it was with locals, teachers, or students. What made it even better was that I had the opportunity to teach in English for the first time to students who were already proficient in the language. It was an incredible experience to apply my English skills in a real classroom setting.

2. Procedures of Practicum

1.Orientation from UST – I received an orientation from the University of Santo Tomas (UST), where I was introduced to the program structure and the expectations.

2.Orientation from ESH (the school) – I then had an orientation from ESH, the school where I observed and taught.

3.Buddy System – My Filipino buddies, Eric and Elisha, were fantastic in guiding me. They took me on a campus tour, showing me the university, department, and school. They were very friendly and helpful throughout my stay.

4.Supervision and Support – I received my schedule from the supervising teacher, Ma’am Lacuata, who was extremely organized and supportive.

5.Key Activities

  • Observation of classes
  • Assisting the teacher in lessons
  • Creating, revising, and improving the PROAPP teaching plan
  • Finally, the Grand Demo Teaching, where I taught the class as part of my practicum evaluation

3. Outcomes of Practicum

  • Improved communication skills in English, both in casual conversations and professional teaching.
  • Confidence in teaching in a foreign environment, especially with students who were proficient in English as their second language.
  • The experience of learning how to adapt my teaching approach and communicate effectively across cultural and linguistic differences.
  • Gaining valuable feedback from my supervising and buddies, which will shape my future teaching practices.

4. The Challenges of Practicum

One of the biggest challenges I faced was teaching students who were already proficient in English, especially since I learned English as a foreign language. I initially felt unsure about how to approach certain lessons and worried about the level of English I should use. However, this turned into an opportunity to push myself and grow. With the support of everyone around me, including my buddies and Ma’am Lacuata, I managed to overcome this challenge. The experience boosted my confidence as a teacher.

5. Overall Impression

My time in the SEA Teacher Program has been one of the best experiences of my life. The most memorable part of the experience was the people—my buddies Eric and Elisha, Ma’am Grace, and everyone who helped make my time in the Philippines unforgettable. Eric and Elisha were always there for me, making life easier by helping me navigate daily tasks and showing me around. I will never forget how Ma’am Grace took the time to help me with everything, from shopping for essentials in the first week to taking us on a trip to the countryside near the end of my stay.

This program was truly a life-changing experience, and I’m so grateful to have been a part of it. There are so many more stories I could share, but I’ll just say that this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I’ll always cherish.
